Summary
Backend and integration engineer; early hire at ShipShap, a B2B SaaS platform for order management, shipping, payments, and fulfillment — including carrier and in-house shipping in Kenya. Built core Django integrations from scratch across carriers and e-commerce platforms, processing 30k+ shipping labels. Also ran sole IT for a multi-branch stone finishing company while working remote. Co-founder of a small web studio focused on deployment, backend, and React delivery. Remote-first.
Experience
Software Engineer · ShipShap
Nov 2020 – Aug 2026 · Remote / Addis Ababa
B2B SaaS platform reducing friction for businesses selling direct to consumers.
Carrier integrations (created providers_dhl, providers_g4s, providers_speedaf apps)
- Built and owned DHL Express integration end-to-end: rates, multi-parcel label purchase, tracking sync, and holiday-aware retry when scheduled pickup falls on a non-business day — completing reliable label purchase for enterprise clients
- Hardened DHL tracking validation when carrier reuses shared shipment tracking numbers
- Built G4S and Speedaf (Kenya) integrations: encrypted API signing, city-based rate tables, and reliable tracking event ordering despite unreliable carrier timestamps
E-commerce platform integrations (created platforms_woocommerce, platforms_shopify)
- Built WooCommerce integration from scratch: OAuth (wc-auth), scoped API tokens, signed webhooks, order/product sync, and reliable credential delivery on store connect
- Built and maintain ShipShap WooCommerce plugin (PHP): OAuth connect, checkout shipping rates, pickup points, HPOS compatibility, and third-party checkout compatibility (Elementor, etc.) — primary plugin author
- Built Shopify integration from scratch: OAuth, order import, fulfillment and label visibility; contributed ongoing reliability improvements (line-item and discount handling, HTTP timeout retries)
API, payments & fulfillment
- Extended public shipping-labels API with payment details, proof-of-delivery / cash-on-delivery fields, and rate-purchase linkage
- Built inventory stock tracking with safe concurrent updates across product variants
- Built pickup-point checkout and fulfillment session workflows
- Production incident response: label purchase failures, merchant plugin issues, client-specific integration debugging
Early startup
- Among the first engineers (3–7 person engineering team, 30+ employee company); core backend engineer from day one
- Owned React Native builds and app store releases during early startup phase
Stack: Python, Django, Django REST Framework, Celery, PostgreSQL, Redis, GCP, GKE, Docker, PHP, WooCommerce, Shopify API, React, Next.js
IT Administrator · Renaissance Stones
Dec 2022 – Jul 2025 · Addis Ababa (~weekly onsite)
Stone, granite, and marble finishing company with four branches across Addis Ababa. Full-time employee concurrent with remote ShipShap work; sole IT for 150+ employees.
- Deployed Proxmox clusters hosting Windows Server workloads at every branch; ZeroTier on all sites for inter-branch routing and access
- Managed Active Directory user provisioning primarily at headquarters while supporting branch operations
- Replaced a year-one ISP VPN design with ZeroTier inter-site routing and iptables filtering after unreliable links between sites
- Supported cross-branch payroll and attendance systems and general IT operations across four locations
Stack: Proxmox, ZeroTier, Windows Server, Active Directory, Linux, iptables
Co-founder · MBAN Developers
2019 – present · mbandevelopers.com
Small web studio in Addis Ababa. Paid per project; my focus on deployment, server management, and backend with a mostly React stack.
- G&Y Engineering Consult — React + Strapi CMS and company website (gandyengineering.com)
- Renaissance Crafts — frontend and backend for product catalog, storefront orders, admin dashboard, and company website (
rcrafts.et, likely defunct) - Gori Gesha Coffee — company website (gorigeshacoffee.com)
Selected Projects
ZeroTierB (beta)
Android ZeroTier client: loopback HTTP proxy (libzt, many networks) or full VPN TUN; AUTO mode picks proxy vs VPN from the physical link. Unofficial; not affiliated with ZeroTier, Inc.
ztnui
Terminal UI (Go, Bubble Tea) for managing a local ZeroTier node and self-hosted controller via the ZeroTier One Service API.
B-LAN
Flutter rewrite of D-LAN — share folders on the LAN, discover peers via mDNS, and download with verified chunk resume. Ed25519 device identity; HTTPS with pinned self-signed TLS for peer transfers.
cursor-termux
Unofficial installer for the Cursor Agent CLI on Termux (Android ARM64): npm bruk-cursor-termux, glibc ELFs patched for Bionic, launcher-only LD_LIBRARY_PATH so Termux-X11 stays intact.
Cashew (private fork)
Personal budget fork of jameskokoska/Cashew (GPL-3): Ethiopia SMS import (Telebirr, CBE, Dashen, Zemen) and transaction splits; parsers are addable. Receipt OCR is early work only.
SecureSettingsManager (private)
Android helper that turns off Developer Options, ADB, and third-party accessibility when Ethiopian banking apps (CBE, Dashen, Bank of Abyssinia) are open, so you are not toggling by hand (Shizuku).
